Why is any non-white race called a "minority"?

Why are Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Indians, etc. called "minorities?" If you put all of these groups together, they outnumber the White race. There shouldn't be any separation. We are all equal. Of course, I am in the Black group and 2 of my friends are in the Asian group. Why not make us all equal?
